How to Connect a Soundbar to a Projector: BOSS A5 Audio Guide

A soundbar can make a projector setup more enjoyable when voices are easy to follow from every seat. The connection matters as much as the speaker: a soundbar with an HDMI input works differently from one designed only to receive audio through HDMI ARC.

For a BOSS A5 setup, start with a compatible Bluetooth speaker or soundbar, or use an external player with a soundbar that supports HDMI input and video passthrough. Choose the route from the equipment you actually own, then rehearse it before buying extra cables.

1. Check the A5, soundbar and playback source

The BOSS A5 Portable 1080p Smart Projector lists a built-in speaker, Bluetooth, one HDMI port, one USB port and an AV connection. Its picture is native 1920 × 1080 Full HD. The current listing does not establish HDMI ARC/eARC, optical audio output or a headphone output. An AV label alone does not tell you whether that socket sends audio out.

Before planning a wired connection, photograph the labels on your equipment and check the exact model manuals. A socket's shape is only part of the answer; its signal direction matters.

  • Playback source: Are you watching an A5 app, a laptop, a streaming player or a cable box?
  • Soundbar input: Look for Bluetooth audio, HDMI IN, optical IN or AUX IN.
  • Video output: For an HDMI passthrough setup, confirm that the soundbar can send the source's picture to a display.
  • Practical fit: Measure the cable route and decide where each remote and power adapter will sit.

2. Choose one clear audio route

Use this table to shortlist a connection. Keep the first test simple: one player, one audio device and the projector. Add switches or other accessories after that arrangement works.

3. Try Bluetooth for a flexible setup

Bluetooth is useful when the A5 sits behind the sofa and the speaker belongs near the screen. Use the soundbar's manual to put it into audio pairing mode, then open the A5's Bluetooth settings and select it. Menu labels can differ, so follow the labels on your unit.

  1. Disconnect the soundbar from a phone or other device that may reconnect automatically.
  2. Pair it near the projector for the first test.
  3. Start the actual app or HDMI source you plan to watch. Check volume and mute on both devices.
  4. Play a close-up conversation and watch whether the words match the person's lips.
  5. Move the equipment to its intended positions and repeat the test.

Pairing is the beginning of the check. Sony's Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance explains that device processing can affect synchronization and wireless conditions can cause interruptions. Its specific menu instructions apply to the listed Sony products; use your own equipment's controls.

If the combination stays synchronized and reconnects reliably after a restart, it may be all your room needs. If a noticeable delay persists, investigate a supported wired route.

4. Connect an external player through a compatible soundbar

A soundbar with HDMI IN plus video passthrough can receive sound directly from an external player while forwarding the picture to the A5. The soundbar must support this arrangement; a lone ARC/eARC socket is insufficient evidence.

For compatible equipment, the connections are:

  1. Player's HDMI OUT to soundbar's HDMI IN.
  2. Soundbar's HDMI video OUT to the A5's HDMI input.
  3. Select the relevant HDMI input on both the soundbar and projector.

Samsung documents this source-to-soundbar-to-display arrangement separately from ARC. Sony's HT-A5000 guide also shows an external player's HDMI output connected to the soundbar's HDMI input. Check the connection section for your exact soundbar before using this route.

Start with a source video setting supported by the complete chain. For an A5 Full HD setup, check the player's 1080p option rather than assuming its highest setting will work. Keep the soundbar powered during this first test; standby passthrough is a separate model-specific feature.

This route carries content from the external player. An app running inside the projector is a different source, so changing to that app also means checking where its audio goes.

5. Handle ARC-only soundbars and adapters carefully

ARC means Audio Return Channel. It lets a compatible display send audio back to a compatible soundbar. An ordinary HDMI input should not be treated as an ARC audio output.

For example, Sonos specifies particular ARC or optical requirements for its home-theater speakers. That is why a familiar HDMI connector does not by itself establish compatibility with a projector.

If your soundbar has only ARC/eARC for wired audio, ask its manufacturer about the complete proposed setup before buying an interface. A basic splitter or passive cable cannot be assumed to provide the necessary audio connection.

An external HDMI source may work with a suitable powered audio extractor, but the extractor's audio output must match the soundbar's input. Optical output will not directly satisfy an ARC-only input. OREI's selection guide distinguishes standard HDMI, ARC/eARC and other audio connections, and asks whether playback comes from display apps or an external source.

Have the supplier confirm the model numbers, video format and supported audio format together. Buying the right interface once is easier than collecting adapters that solve different problems.

6. Fix silence, echo and lip-sync methodically

Start with a short, familiar scene containing clear speech. Change one setting or connection, replay the same section, and note the result. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.

For an audio-format problem, a source's stereo PCM option can be a useful diagnostic setting when supported by the receiving device. Sony's soundbar sync guidance includes PCM and direct source connection among its checks for applicable equipment. Record your original setting so you can restore it.

Use only sync adjustments your equipment actually provides. Note whether sound is early or late before moving a delay slider. If the problem is missing speech rather than timing, see our HDMI picture but no dialogue guide for a deeper audio-route check.

7. Place the speaker for your actual room

Put the soundbar where its instructions recommend, with its drivers clear of objects. Check that it does not cover the projected image or block the A5's light path. Sit in the nearest, middle and farthest seats and listen to ordinary dialogue before trying a loud action sequence.

In an apartment, start at the volume you would realistically use in the evening. If the soundbar offers a dialogue or night mode, compare it using the same scene. Decide whether voices become easier to understand without constantly reaching for the remote.

Our New York City projector guide can help with apartment room planning, while the Chicago projector guide covers considerations such as lower-level rooms and changing seating. Use those room measurements alongside the audio plan, and keep the walkway clear when arranging the projector, speaker and cables.

8. Rehearse before buying or installing

Bring the whole setup together on a temporary surface before hiding cables or fixing equipment in place. Rehearse this short sequence:

  • Start every device from its normal powered-off or standby state.
  • Open the intended program and confirm picture, dialogue and lip-sync.
  • Pause, resume, change volume and switch to a second source if you use one.
  • Restart once more to check that the connection is repeatable.

Keep a photo of the working connections and a note of the selected inputs. If choosing new equipment, send US Projector support your A5 setup, playback device, proposed soundbar model and photos of its ports. Review current A5 specifications, US pricing and the active bundle before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect a soundbar directly to the BOSS A5 with HDMI?

Do not plan a direct ARC connection from the current product listing alone. It lists HDMI but does not establish ARC/eARC audio return. A supported external-player-to-soundbar passthrough arrangement is a separate option because the player supplies the audio.

Why does my soundbar work with my phone but not the projector?

Successful phone playback only confirms that pairing. Disconnect the phone, place the soundbar in pairing mode, select it on the A5 and test the actual program. Check both volume controls and whether the soundbar reconnects to another saved device.

Will Bluetooth be synchronized well enough for movies?

Test your particular combination with spoken dialogue. A usable connection should sound natural from your normal seat and stay consistent through playback. If delay remains distracting after supported adjustments, compare a compatible wired route.

Why do external-player movies work but projector apps stay silent?

In a passthrough setup, the soundbar receives audio from the player connected to its HDMI input. A projector app originates elsewhere. Check a supported audio route for that app, or use the compatible external player for the service.

Can I use the A5's AV or USB port as an audio output?

The published labels do not establish that function. Check the unit's manual and ask support to confirm the direction and supported use before connecting an adapter. Treat the connection information as incomplete until that specific question is answered.

Do I need an audio extractor to enjoy the A5?

No. Start by assessing the built-in speaker or a compatible Bluetooth device. A source-based wired route may also suit equipment you already own. An extractor is useful only when it solves a verified connection need in your particular setup.
